Hank Desjardins

This was my first year using a snow removal service. I’m out in the country at least 30 minutes from Mike’s shop, yet he was clearing my 6-car driveway before 6 am throughout this very snowy winter without fault. I have to say I was impressed with his work and certainly recommend him to anyone in need of his services.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Huge thanks to Mike and Coulson from BigG Landscaping for the incredible job they did cleaning up our property after the recent ice storm in Orillia. From the moment they arrived, they were friendly, professional, and totally focused on getting everything back in shape. We were so impressed by how thorough they were - nothing was too much trouble, and they treated our property with real care and respect. It was such a relief to have their help during a pretty stressful time, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. It’s not every day you come across a team that combines skill, efficiency, and genuine kindness the way they do. Highly recommend BigG Landscaping - thank you again, Mike and Coulson!

Mike has been helping me with my lawn for the third season this year. He’s simply excellent. My lawn has never been better looking. Mike provides a very reliable and excellent service. He works fast and is detail oriented, so the final effect is that of meticulously maintained lawn. Thank you so much, Mike.

Mike from BIG G landscapes and contracting has sprayed our property for Mosquitoes. We find his pricing to be fair and his services to he completed in a timely manner. Our family has been enjoying our backyard without the bites of mosquitoes this season. Thanks Mike

We are sooooo happy to finally enjoy our backyard and porch. Mike is amazing and reliable and the system works! It's a commitment, but worth it to enjoy the summer months. I highly recommend him and his team. Thank you Mike for giving us our summers back.

Before you hire a landscaper in Ontario

No general licence, but specific activities are regulated: tree work near hydro lines, pesticide application, and retaining walls above a certain height.

General liability insurance and WSIB clearance

Particularly important for tree work and any job using excavators or skid steers near a structure.

ISA Certified Arborist, for tree work

A recognised certification indicating training in tree health and safe removal. Worth insisting on for any mature tree near a building.

Verify with: The International Society of Arboriculture maintains a public certification directory.

Check Big G Landscapes and Contracting on the official register

Ontario pesticide applicator licence

Required for anyone applying pesticides commercially. Ontario also restricts cosmetic pesticide use, so be sceptical of anyone offering broad chemical lawn treatment.

Permit and engineering for retaining walls

Most Ontario municipalities require a permit for retaining walls above roughly one metre, and engineered drawings above that. A failed retaining wall is expensive and can involve your neighbour.

Verify with: Your municipal building department.

Questions worth asking

  • Is there a design fee, and is it credited against the build if I go ahead?
  • How deep is the base under any hardscaping, and what material is it?
  • How will this change where water goes? Where does it drain to now, and after?
  • Is there a plant warranty, how long does it run, and what voids it?
  • Is disposal of excavated material and old sod included?
