Our experience working with Nick and his talented team at Great North Concrete was very positive. We are extremely happy with the beautiful concrete work he did for our shared driveway and side walkway. Nick does very high quality work for a very affordable price. Not only does the driveway look great, but the knowledgeable team expertly sloped the concrete to direct water away from the foundation of the house. We could not be more pleased with the overall experience, and would highly recommend Nick for any project, small or large.

Nick and his team did great work in a short time. Our front porch and sidewalk look great, the team was professional, kind and clearly knew what they were doing. I appreciate how Nick was willing to add an extra step for me at no additional cost to make the whole project tie nicely together. Honest contractors who do good work are so rare these days. Great North concrete worked with us to bring our dream patio to fruition. They asked what colour and design we wanted, and was sure to come out to do a measure up. They gave us clear explanations on what the strengths and weaknesses were for the design and location of the patio. They brought in machinery to properly prepare the land. They laid gravel and packed everything judiciously. The forming was done with care to make sure everything would be secure for the pour. When the concrete truck showed up they worked hard and moved fast to get the mix where it needed to go. I was doing a fence at the same time as the patio, so we used the post holes to get rid of the extra mix. The boys had everything prepped properly at this point to be able to level off, apply colour, and stamp the concrete efficiently. After some time, they came back to spray the colour powder off for the reveal, and WOW I couldnt believe how sexy that concrete looked! Nick dropped by at another date to get some relief cuts in. The cuts were nice and straight. We had some bad weather after that, so we had to wait a few weeks, but Nick dropped by again to spray the sealer. The sealer gave it a nice glazed/glossy look. They also poured a pad as a foundation for a shed. This was done with a smooth edge and a broom finish. My son enjoyed watering the pad for the next week to help it cure and watch it turn white. Would highly recommend Great North Concrete, they did an excellent job. Its been roughly 1 year since they completed the job and everything is holding up very well so far.
Before you hire a concrete contractor in Ontario
No provincial trade licence is required for flatwork. Structural concrete may require engineered drawings and a building permit.
General liability insurance and WSIB clearance
Standard checks for any trade working on your property.
Building permit, where applicable
Generally not required to replace an existing driveway. Usually required for structural elements, retaining walls above a certain height, and anything supporting a building.
Verify with: Your municipal building department.
Municipal driveway or curb-cut approval
Changing a driveway width or its connection to the road normally requires approval, and municipalities do enforce this.
Locate request before excavation
Ontario law requires underground utility locates before digging. The contractor should be arranging this through Ontario One Call, at no cost.

- How deep is the granular base, and will it be compacted in lifts?
- What concrete strength are you specifying, and is it air-entrained? (Air entrainment is what resists freeze-thaw damage.)
- What reinforcement is included - rebar, mesh, or fibre?
- Where will control joints go and how deep will they be cut?
- How is the slope set so water drains away from the house?
