I’ve been putting off replacing my roof for years due to the cost and hassle as a female dealing with mostly male contractors and being taken advantage of in the past. From my first call to Amelia in the office, I could tell J&A was a good fit and there is a reason they have been in business throughout the Hudson valley for almost 90 years. Couldn’t be more satisfied with the level of professionalism and punctuality. Highly recommend when it’s time to replace your old roof!

I had a great experience with J&A. Nate made the entire process painless. He gave me a quick quote (with a fair price), explained the process and finished the job without issue. I actually couldn't believe how fast they finished. I ended up having plywood that needed to be replaced after they ripped the old singles off. I went from worrying about a failing roof to having the confidence that my roof is something I no longer have to think about.

Just had a total roof replacement with J&A and I couldn’t be happier! Derek and his crew did a fantastic job. It couldn’t have gone any smoother, these guys are professionals! Before they got started, they covered my walkway, bushes, windows and my deck. In no time at all, the old shingles were off and they were working their magic. When they left that day, you wouldn’t have even known they were there. I HIGHLY recommend them!

I couldn’t be happier with the job that Nate and his team did on my metal roof in April of 2025. His team arrived at my home, promptly, and started ripping off the existing shingle roof. They were done with clean up the same day, and started replacing some plywood that had deteriorated over time. The next day, ice and rain barrier was applied to the roof and application of the new roof started. The metal installers took their time to measure the roof to insure that when the standing seem roof was installed it would look balanced. The seams and transitions on the right side matched the left side. They also installed 2 skylights on the back side of the house. These guys really know what they are doing, probably why they have been in business for 80+ Years. For anyone looking to get their roof replaced, this is the company to go with!!!! A Class act company!!!!

The team at J&A Roofing gets the job done! From the fair quote to prompt installation they were professional. Working with Fred on material selection and Manny and the crew during install was a pleasure. I was especially impressed with the safety of the staff, the speed of removal on our big cape. They completed the removal, resurface, barrier, edging & shingles all in one day! The area around the house was spotless after cleanup. I highly recommend J&A Roofing.

Before you hire a roofer in Ontario

No. Roofing is not a compulsory trade in Ontario, so there is no licence to verify - which makes insurance and WSIB coverage the checks that matter.

WSIB clearance certificate

The most important document in this trade. Ask for a current certificate and confirm it names the company doing your work, not a subcontractor you have never met. It should be dated within the last 90 days.

Verify with: WSIB clearance certificates can be validated online by the account number.

General liability insurance

Two million dollars minimum for residential roofing. Request the certificate of insurance directly from the broker rather than a photocopy, and confirm the policy is current.

Manufacturer shingle certification

Optional but meaningful. Manufacturers certify installers, and certification is what unlocks the extended system warranty. Without it you have a material warranty only, which covers far less than most homeowners assume.

Municipal business licence

Some Ontario municipalities require one. Not universal, but easy to ask about.

Questions worth asking

  • Can I see a current WSIB clearance certificate and your liability certificate of insurance?
  • Is this a full tear-off, or shingling over the existing layer? (Overlays are cheaper and shorten roof life.)
  • How much ice and water shield is included, and how far up from the eave?
  • Are you certified by the shingle manufacturer, and does this quote include the system warranty or only the material warranty?
  • What happens if you find rotten decking? What is the per-sheet price, and will you show me before replacing it?
