Ann-Maureen Owens

Excellent and very careful work! Wayne gives good advice and is considerate and trustworthy. He knows a lot about colour composition and paint quality and has solutions to house decorating problems. He protects surfaces around the paint job and leaves the work site clean and tidy. We are very pleased with both his exterior and interior work on our house.

Mariah Hamilton

I hired Wayne to paint the exterior of my heritage townhouse and subsequently the interior. The outside in particular was in a bad state, and he persevered to make repairs and bring it back to life. Wayne is highly professional and respectful of the homeowners when he is working in their space. I would not hesitate to hire Wayne again.

Before you hire a painter in Ontario

No provincial licence required. Insurance and a clear written scope carry the weight here.

General liability insurance

Covers overspray on a neighbour's car, damage to flooring, and ladder incidents. Ask for the certificate.

WSIB clearance

Especially relevant for exterior work at height. Many small painting operations are owner-operators who may be exempt - ask them to confirm their status in writing either way.

Lead-safe work practices for pre-1980 homes

Sanding old paint can disturb lead. A painter working on an older home should be able to describe how they contain dust.

Questions worth asking

  • What preparation is included - filling, sanding, caulking, priming?
  • How many coats, and is primer counted as one of them?
  • What paint product and finish line are you using? (Brand alone does not say much; the product line does.)
  • Does the quote include ceilings, trim, doors and closet interiors, or walls only?
  • How are floors, furniture and fixtures protected?
