What hot tub installation costs in Ontario

Compare tubs on insulation quality and cabinet construction rather than jet count. Jet count is a marketing number; full-foam insulation is what determines whether the tub costs $40 or $140 a month to run through an Ontario winter.

JobTypical range
Entry-level hot tubThinner insulation, which shows up in running cost every winter.$6,000 – $12,000
Mid-range hot tubWhere most well-insulated, well-built residential tubs sit.$12,000 – $20,000
Premium hot tub or swim spaSwim spas are at the top and often need engineered support.$20,000 – $40,000+
240V electrical connection, installedIncludes the ESA notification. Distance from the panel drives the cost.$900 – $2,500
Concrete pad or gravel baseA properly compacted gravel base is often sufficient and cheaper than concrete.$800 – $3,000
Crane placementNeeded when the tub cannot be rolled through a gate.$500 – $1,500
Annual running costElectricity and chemicals. Insulation quality is the main variable.$500 – $1,500 / year

Planning estimates for Ontario, not quotes. Always get written quotes against the same written specification.

Questions to ask before you hire

  • What is the filled weight, and is my intended base or deck rated for it?
  • Which licensed electrical contractor will do the connection, and is the ESA notification included?
  • Will I get the Certificate of Acceptance when it passes inspection?
  • Can the tub physically reach the location, or is a crane required - and is that in the price?
  • What is the insulation construction, and what is the realistic monthly running cost in winter?
  • What does the warranty cover - shell, plumbing, components, labour - and for how long each?
  • Who services this locally, and what is the callout charge after the warranty ends?

Warning signs

  • An offer to connect the tub without an ESA notification, or with an extension cord adapter.
  • No discussion of base preparation or deck capacity.
  • A quote for the tub alone presented as the all-in cost.
  • Vague warranty terms, particularly "lifetime" claims on the shell with no definition.
