I recently had Downton Windows replace a single window in my home, and I couldn’t be more impressed with the service. Despite it being a small job, the team treated it with the same level of care and professionalism as a larger project. They were punctual, courteous, and ensured that every detail was perfect. The installation was flawless, and the quality of the work was excellent. The new window looks fantastic and has made a noticeable difference in my home. I highly recommend Downton Windows for their exceptional service, no matter the size of the job

We used Roy and his team over the last near decade to replace windows and doors in our last two homes on multiple occasions. They are ALWAYS incredibly professional, reliable and efficient. Each job looked beautiful. 100 percent would recommend!

My husband and I worked in a commercial environment for years and worked with Roy and his crew. Once we left, we moved in with my mother inlaw. We had Roy and his right hand Ben come and install the door. They removed a door and a window. And put the beautiful new patio door in. They started a little after 9am and finished before 3pm. Just the two of them. There was also a lunch break in there. The door is beautif...... highly recommend them for any door or window job....

Roy was recommended by dear friends. We hired Downton Windows to install a new, large front window in our house. While it took time for the window to arrive due to issues at the warehouse, we were very pleased that the work could take place before the end of spring. Roy was flexible about a work date in order to coordinate with our work schedules. He and his colleague arrived as expected and set to work. They removed the original window, replaced it with a custom ledge and fixed a minor issue with another window within four hours. They were polite, communicative and completed the work and clean up to a high standard. We love the new window and the service provided by Downton. We look forward to working with them in the fall when they replace our back door. Highly recommended!

Before you hire a window and door installer in Ontario

No provincial licence is required. Installation quality is governed by manufacturer specification and the Ontario Building Code rather than by a trade certificate.

General liability insurance and WSIB clearance

Standard checks. Window installation involves ladder work and heavy glass.

Manufacturer-trained installer status

Matters more than usual here, because most window warranties are voided by installation that departs from the manufacturer specification.

Building permit for new or enlarged openings

Replacing a window in an existing opening generally does not need one. Cutting a new opening, or enlarging one for a basement egress window, generally does.

Verify with: Your municipal building department confirms what your specific job requires.

ENERGY STAR certification for the product

Relevant if you intend to claim any efficiency rebate, which typically requires certified products and documentation.

Questions worth asking

  • Is this a retrofit or a full-frame installation? What would the other one cost?
  • How is the gap between the window and the rough opening insulated and air-sealed?
  • Is exterior capping included, and in what colour and material?
  • Is the warranty on the glass seal, the frame, and the labour - and are they different lengths?
  • Is the warranty transferable if I sell the house?
