We recently needed to replace our aging storm door. From the initial assessment and quote to the installation, the services offered by Howald’s were timely and efficient. The cost estimates were above all clearly explained and honest. We will certainly call upon Howald’s in the future. Highly recommended!

Howald installed eleven windows into our century home during August 2024; they did a great job. Not only were the windows themselves of great quality, but so was the installation process. The windows now look great and my home is much less draughty than it was!

We are just in the first steps of the process for replacing our large livingroom window. Peter came to our home for measurements and to explain the process. It took about 15 minutes. He was very knowledgeable, did not try to sell us something we didn't want, was courteous and showed up on time. He got back to us with a reasonable quote and we are getting a new window! We so much appreciate the good customer service from Peter and look forward to our new window. Janet & Greg

After putting it off for a few years we decided to finally indulge in a new front door. We met with 3 companies to get comparative advice and pricing. Of the 3 companies that we met with, Ben from Howald made the best impression on us. We continued to work with him and when we visited their showroom both Peter and Kevin were also very helpful in getting the door and accessories sorted out, answering all of our questions. We were moving from a smaller front door with 2 smaller sidelights and went with a wider, beautiful new front door with the artisan glass and a single wider sidelight with matching glass. Peter came to verify final measurements and provided the peace of mind that we needed to know that this was a great choice for us. Weeks before we expected them to have the door Ben called to see if we were ready for the install. Justin & Matt did a fabulous installation, removing the old doors and cleaned up perfectly. They explained the steps in the process for the day and buttoned everything up with skill and class. We absolutely love our new front door! The amount of curb appeal is significant & we are still getting used to all of the increased natural light. We are getting them to quote replacing a large picture window next. Definitely found peace of mind with Howald Windows & Doors. Thank you all for a great job and exceptional customer service! Kelly & Carol Waterloo, ON

We had 12 windows in our house replaced by Howald. Everyone we dealt with was friendly, professional and did a great job walking us through the process. Pricing was fair and they were honest about what work needed to be done now vs. later. Our installers Jason and Scott were very thorough and made sure everything was done right, including clean up. We're very happy with the quality of product, work and customer service from Howald. Thanks so much to the entire team, 10/10 would recommend!

Before you hire a window and door installer in Ontario

No provincial licence is required. Installation quality is governed by manufacturer specification and the Ontario Building Code rather than by a trade certificate.

General liability insurance and WSIB clearance

Standard checks. Window installation involves ladder work and heavy glass.

Manufacturer-trained installer status

Matters more than usual here, because most window warranties are voided by installation that departs from the manufacturer specification.

Building permit for new or enlarged openings

Replacing a window in an existing opening generally does not need one. Cutting a new opening, or enlarging one for a basement egress window, generally does.

Verify with: Your municipal building department confirms what your specific job requires.

ENERGY STAR certification for the product

Relevant if you intend to claim any efficiency rebate, which typically requires certified products and documentation.

Questions worth asking

  • Is this a retrofit or a full-frame installation? What would the other one cost?
  • How is the gap between the window and the rough opening insulated and air-sealed?
  • Is exterior capping included, and in what colour and material?
  • Is the warranty on the glass seal, the frame, and the labour - and are they different lengths?
  • Is the warranty transferable if I sell the house?
