Macdonald’s replaced the gable ends of our house last week and I cannot say enough about how impressed we were with the work done. It started from the moment we meet Joe who came out to look at what needed to be done and give us a quote. He was very professional and very knowledgeable. The quote was a fair quote for the work. The communication with MacDonalds and us was always prompt and timely. We were always notified of estimated time for the work to be completed and if there was an issue due to the inclement weather we were informed. The two employees who came to do the work were very professional and very friendly. They were true warriors as they did the work in the terrible winter conditions. They were very attentive in doing an excellent job and always left the job site very clean. We would highly recommend MacDonalds for any work you need done. Top notch company. C and I Hill Waterloo

We used Rick MacDonald a couple years ago to replace most of our home's windows, and we've used them again over the past few weeks for some additional odds-and-ends (back door, large bay window). The biggest thing I've come to appreciate and respect is that they take care of you. Whether that's ensuring the quality of work is what you expect, or working to resolve supplier challenges if things outside their control go wrong (e.g., manufacturer defect), I've been able to trust that they'll have my back. We've used Rick Macdonald twice now, and we definitely won't hesitate to use them for other needs in the future as well. Thank you to the whole team for taking care of us and our home, we appreciate you!

I had a great experience with them. I received four quotes, and they were by far the most affordable. They were also the only company to provide multiple options for replacing my patio door. The door arrived earlier than expected, and the installation was smooth and efficient. Highly recommend!

Just had their team out to do a complete new roof job and they were excellent from beginning to end. Easy to work with to schedule the work, which was done on time exactly as outlined. Very fair pricing for the work and the end result is fantastic

We had Rick MacDonald do our eavestroughs with leaf guards and we are very happy with the outcome. From Quote to job completion they were very efficient affordable and were able complete it promptly within a few weeks of quotation. Mike Turton quoted the job and was very professional, knowledgeable and was able to answer any concern or questions I had without being pushy. He even contacted me after completion to ensure we were completely satisfied. It was such a great experience that they are also doing my mothers place next!! Stay tuned :-)

Before you hire a window and door installer in Ontario

No provincial licence is required. Installation quality is governed by manufacturer specification and the Ontario Building Code rather than by a trade certificate.

General liability insurance and WSIB clearance

Standard checks. Window installation involves ladder work and heavy glass.

Manufacturer-trained installer status

Matters more than usual here, because most window warranties are voided by installation that departs from the manufacturer specification.

Building permit for new or enlarged openings

Replacing a window in an existing opening generally does not need one. Cutting a new opening, or enlarging one for a basement egress window, generally does.

Verify with: Your municipal building department confirms what your specific job requires.

ENERGY STAR certification for the product

Relevant if you intend to claim any efficiency rebate, which typically requires certified products and documentation.

Questions worth asking

  • Is this a retrofit or a full-frame installation? What would the other one cost?
  • How is the gap between the window and the rough opening insulated and air-sealed?
  • Is exterior capping included, and in what colour and material?
  • Is the warranty on the glass seal, the frame, and the labour - and are they different lengths?
  • Is the warranty transferable if I sell the house?
