As a new homeowner we weren't sure who to reach out to for help to have some lights moved and fixtures changed out. Jake was an absolutely pleasure to work with. His level of professionalism was top tier and he was extremely kind. He was very helpful in approaching the work we needed done and we appreciate his flexibility when needing to change the plan. His team was extremely efficient! I highly recommend Jake and his team at Somerton Electric!!

Want to give a huge shout out to Somerton Electric. Jake was great about co-ordinating everything with London Hydro/appointment times, and Phil did a clean, fantastic job installing my new EV car charger and upgraded 200 amp panel. Pricing was also very reasonable. Will see you guys in the future for my other electrical projects!

Jake and his team were fast to respond to our call. We had a complex issue that required specialized attention. Jake and his team were fast to address everything that needed to be fixed. The communication has been a high point. We were on a short timeline and Jake always responded to messages in a timely manner, so we were always updated about the progress. Tristan came and fixed everything in our house super fast and professionally. I had a baseboard heater off for 2 years, and he fixed it in under a minute. Also changed some wall plugs and fixed some other small stuff all around the house. Charged a very fair price, and below what I expected to pay, based on other companies' quotes. +++++

Before you hire an electrician in Ontario

Yes, twice over. The person needs a 309A Certificate of Qualification; the business needs an ECRA/ESA Electrical Contractor Licence.

ECRA/ESA Electrical Contractor Licence

A seven-digit number that must appear on advertising, vehicles, quotes and invoices. If you cannot find it on the quote, ask - a licensed contractor is required to provide it.

Held by the individual. A licensed contractor employs certified electricians and apprentices; the apprentices work under supervision.

ESA notification (the permit) for the specific job

Most work beyond replacing a light fixture requires the contractor to file a notification with ESA and have the work inspected. You should receive a Certificate of Acceptance when it passes. Keep it. You will want it when you sell.

Two million in liability is standard. Electrical fires are the reason this is not a box-ticking exercise.

Questions worth asking

What is your ECRA/ESA licence number? (Then look it up before you sign anything.)
Will you file the ESA notification, and is the fee included in this price?
Will I receive the Certificate of Acceptance when the work passes inspection?
Is my panel at capacity? If this job needs a service upgrade, I want to know now rather than halfway through.
Who is physically doing the work - a certified electrician or an apprentice under supervision?
