An awesome community hub! We are lucky to have great programs and the facilities to use. I have swam and taken classes here. Love that they work with the city for a swim pass for city residence too.

I came to the Y with my grandchildren and their mother to swim on Sunday at 2 PM because it’s an open Swim until 330. When we arrived, we were told at the door that it was closing at 2:15 for a private group. There’s no notification on the webpage or anywhere that I could find. We spent a long time getting ready and driving there, and the children were very excited only to be let down and very disappointed. It should be posted Clearly on the webpage when it is going to be closed for an event. This is family day weekend.

Decided to try it out compared to another gym in the area. The upstairs and downstairs being focused on cardio and upper body separately is a nice touch. Membership is a bit pricey (for a good cause though) but the location is convenient for people in this part of St. Thomas.

The staff are amazing, especially Mathew, Angela and Rosemary! Mathew gave me the tour of the facility on my first day and answered all my questions, he was very pleasant and welcoming, Angela assisted me with the membership payment plan and was also very kind and sweet and Rosemary guided me through the Y Thrive program with enthusiasm and encouragement! Thank you to the staff and volunteers for ALL that you do and for the amazing customer service and support!! 🤗 Kindest Rose
Before you hire a pool builder in Ontario
Pool building itself is not a licensed trade, but the electrical work is, and the enclosure permit is mandatory.
Municipal pool enclosure permit
Required in essentially every Ontario municipality, usually before excavation begins. Bylaws specify fence height, gate self-closing and self-latching hardware, and how soon the enclosure must be in place. Enforcement is real and the liability if a child accesses an unfenced pool is severe.
Verify with: Your municipality's building or bylaw department.
ESA notification for pool electrical and bonding
Pool electrical must be installed by a licensed electrical contractor, and the metal structure must be bonded. This requires an ESA notification and inspection.
Verify with: The Electrical Safety Authority, esasafe.com.
Check Family YMCA of St. Thomas-Elgin on the official registerUtility locates before excavation
Legally required. Gas and hydro service lines cross yards at unpredictable depths.
Verify with: Ontario One Call.

Excavation near a house foundation carries real risk. Confirm coverage amounts.
Questions worth asking
- What is the total installed cost including electrical, gas, decking, fencing and landscape restoration?
- Who pulls the enclosure permit, and when must the fence be up relative to excavation?
- Which licensed electrical contractor are you using, and will I receive the ESA Certificate of Acceptance?
- What is the realistic installation window, and what happens if it slips past the season?
- How is my deposit protected, and what is refundable if you cannot start?
