Joe and Nadime were an amazing pair for the installation part of an urgent rental water heater unit. They arrived soon after the work order was processed. They completed the job in a short amount time, and without any deficiencies. They both applied critical thinking where and when necessary with no comprise, as well as solid integrity with their communication. I will be switching all my plumbing and heating requirements to generate business only from Alex McCoy moving forward. I was impressed to have experienced this type of workmanship in the 613 (Kingston area)...twas remarkable. The follow up team consisting of Hayden and Wyatt (for gas technicalities) was friendly, diligent and prompt. For me to give out compliments is not an easy task. Great work from everyone (including the receptionist)... Thank you, The Boys from you know where...

Just had Hayden and wyatt at hour home today to install and replace new hot-water on demand unit, what a great pair of very polite young and very efficient tradesman, they were so helpful at answering all of our questions, and like I said being a retired tradesman I could tell how good they were both at there trades, cant say enough about these two young men, if all the tradesman are like them from mccoy, l would definitely not hesitate to call mccoy again for plumbing or heating, give Them a try if you will not be disappointed, thank--you Hayden and wyatt and mccoy plumbing and heating..

They care more about appeasing property management companies over local clients, you are either pushed off or given a month out for an appt to make room for all the property management “emergencies”. Unfortunately their current clientele are dying out and they are doing a terrible job of bringing in a next generation. Edited to add: I’m not in your system because it was impossible to get an appt. Hence my review.

Heron Management

They are very quick to respond and always reliable during emergency calls. We actively use them for our emergency services, and their team — especially Jessica and Devin — are outstanding. They provide excellent communication and ensure timely quotes are sent out. Highly recommend!

Spencer and Trey came to fix a few things today including my toilet upstairs. They were so professional and nice. They let me know exactly what they were doing and what was completed. They even took their boots off every time they were in and out of the door, which was a lot. My plumbing issues are completely resolved and I could not recommend McCoy plumbing more.

Before you hire a plumber in Ontario

Yes. Plumber (306A) is a compulsory trade in Ontario - working without certification is illegal, not just inadvisable.

Certificate of Qualification, 306A Plumber

The individual doing the work must hold this, or be a registered apprentice working under someone who does. Ask for the certificate number and the name it is issued to. It belongs to a person, not a company.

Verify with: Skilled Trades Ontario maintains the public register of certified tradespeople.

General liability insurance

Two million dollars is the common floor for residential work. Water damage escalates fast, and a burst supply line during a renovation can exceed a small policy in an afternoon.

WSIB clearance

If a worker is injured on your property and the contractor has no coverage, you can be drawn into the claim. A clearance certificate is free for the contractor to pull and takes minutes.

Verify with: WSIB issues clearance certificates directly to the contractor on request.

TSSA gas technician certificate (only if gas is involved)

G1, G2 or G3 depending on scope. Required for anything connecting to a natural gas or propane line.

Verify with: The Technical Standards and Safety Authority regulates fuel safety in Ontario.

Questions worth asking

  • Is the person doing the work certified in 306A, or an apprentice being supervised? Both are fine. You just want to know.
  • Is this quote flat rate or time and materials? If hourly, what is the estimated range and what happens if it runs over?
  • Does the job touch a gas line, and if so who holds the TSSA certificate?
  • Does this need a municipal plumbing permit, and are you pulling it?
  • What is the warranty on labour, separately from the manufacturer warranty on parts?
