This was a second time I worked with Rainbow Windows. The first time was for a brand new window in my kitchen. More recently, they replaced my old windows. Prompt, efficient, great communication, excellent workmanship, and friendly. Not pushy at all when discussing potential projects. I plan to have them back when we're ready to tackle down some door projects.

Nino and his team were fabulous from start to finish. He works hard to listen and be responsive to what we were looking for. They were always punctual , respectful and extremely professional. Our home just got a beautiful facelift!

Excellent service and very customer friendly. Nino was great to work with, knowledgeable and does not try to oversell. He gained our trust right away, unlike the many others we took quotes from. He also checks in with you to work with your schedule for installation. Team that came to install was very prompt and efficient. They did a great job and left no mess. Great company, highly recommend!

Jeff does the job right. He's knowledgeable and if there's any doubt he gets the answers quickly. No hard sell, no pushiness. More like a friend. He was always on time and reconfirmed appointments a day or two before. The door and two windows he installed look great and function well. We used this long established company more than a decade ago with equally similar results. That's why they're still around. Good job, Jeff. Thank You.

EDIT: Don't believe the reply I have received. We have had someone come twice to fix it, and we were home both times. We were told we either need an awning and their contract says there's no guarantee in inclement weather. If you need a screen door go with another company, you will be disappointed with Rainbow Windows and Doors. Not only does rain always drip into my house because the product is severely subpar, but snow also gets in in the winter. We've complained a few times and they've sent someone twice to "fix" the issue butttt it's always raining in my home every time it's raining outside so is it really fixed? Photos attached, the proof is in the pudding.

Before you hire a general contractor in Ontario

No provincial licence exists for general contracting on existing homes. New home construction is different - those builders must be HCRA licensed.

Written contract with defined scope and payment schedule

The core protection. Should specify the fee structure explicitly - fixed price, cost plus a percentage, or cost plus a fixed fee - and what the fee is calculated on.

General liability insurance, and confirmation it covers your project type

Two million minimum. Ask specifically whether structural work is excluded, because some policies exclude it.

WSIB clearance for the GC and every subcontractor

The GC should be collecting clearance certificates from their subs. Ask whether they do; a good one will say yes without hesitating.

Permits pulled in the contractor's name

If the permit is in your name you become the constructor under Ontario's occupational health and safety framework, with the obligations that carries. Do not agree to this casually.

Verify with: Your municipal building department.

Questions worth asking

  • Is this fixed price, cost plus percentage, or cost plus fixed fee - and what is the fee calculated on?
  • Will you pull the permits in your company name?
  • Which trades are your own crews and which are subcontracted?
  • Do you collect WSIB clearance certificates from your subcontractors?
  • How many active projects will you be running while mine is open, and who is my day-to-day contact?
